Key to the European members
of section Rubromarginatae

Mycena sect. rubromarginatae Singer ex Maas Geest. comprises 15 species in Europe: M. albidolilacea Kühner & Maire apud Kühner, M. aurantiistipitata Robich & Gennari, M. bresadolana Robich & Neville, M. brunneomarginata Robich, M. capillaripes Peck, M. decora Maas Geest., M. hepatica Villarreal, Heykoop & Maas Geest., M. olivaceomarginata (Massee) Massee, M. purpureofusca (Peck) Sacc., M. renati Quél., M. roseoquercina Villareal & Esteve-Rav., M. rubromarginata (Fr.) P. Kumm., Mycena rubroquercina Moreno & Heykoop, M. schildiana Maas Geest., M. seynii Quél.

Some of these have been described quite recently and hence they are poorly known. In Norway only five species have been recorded.

1. Pileus white to whitish for the greater part, delicately tinted lilaceous, brownish wine to mauve or pale yellowish at the centre. Hyphae og the pileipellis not covered with coarse, broadly rounded, often inflated excrescences.
  2. Hyphae of the cortical layer of the stipe diverticulate.
    3. Pileus pinkish lilac or flesh-coloured, whitish towards the margin. Lamellar edge pinkish. Spores 9.2-11.6 x 5.6-6.7 µm, somewhat elongated pip-shaped. Cheilocystidia variously shaped with one or several necks or with several excrescences: M. albidolilacea
    3. Pileus cream coloured. Lamellar edge brown. Spores 8.5-11 x 5-6(-7.5) µm, pip-shaped. Cheilocystidia smooth and broadly rounded at the apex or with some coarse excrescences. Hyphae of the pileipellis and of the stipe cortex with granular yellow-brown pigment: M. brunneomarginata
  2. Hyphae of the cortical layer of the stipe smooth.
    4. Pileus delicately pink becoming whitish. Stipe violet. Terminal cells curved sharply outwards forming smooth caulocystidia: M. decora
    4. Pileus pale creamy white to pale brownish white, delicately brownish wine-coloured at the centre. Stipe yellowish with an isabelline flush, turning dark brown from the base with age. Terminal cells absent: M. schildiana
1. Pileus generally more richly coloured to very dark, except sometimes in one species which is otherwise characterized by a conspicuously yellow stipe and by broadly rounded to much inflated excrescences covering the hyphae of the pileipellis.
  5. Hyphae and hymenial elements with clamps.
    6. Stipe yellow or with somewhat yellowish colours
      7. Stipe bright yellow. Hyphae of the pileipellis smooth or with broadly rounded and inflated excrescences.
        8. Stipe bright yellow, lilac-yellow, pink-yellow. Pileus brown-lilac, pink-lilac. Hyphae of the pileipellis gelatinized, smooth or with rounded excrescences. Hyphae of the cortical layer of the stipe smooth. Spores subglobose 8.5-11(-12) µm long: M. bresadolana
        8. Stipe yellow. Pileus lilaceous pink to yellowish red or pale brownish vinaceous. Hyphae of the pileipellis covered with broadly rounded, inflated excrescences. Spores ellipsoid 9-13 µm long: M. renati
      7. Stipe olive-yellow or with orange-yellow pruina
        9. Pleurocystidia absent. Hyphae of the cortical layer of the stipe diverticulate, terminal cells absent or very rare: M. olivaceomarginata
        9. Pleurocystidia numerous, fusiform. Hyphae of the cortical layer of the stipe smooth, terminal cells forming caulocystidia 55-200 µm long: M. aurantiistipitata
      7. Stipe olive brown to dark grey, turning more yellow when drying. Small species with pinkish grey pileus, growing on dead leaves and twigs of Quercus ilex: M. roseoquercina
    6. Stipe without yellowish or olivaceous colours
      10. Hyphae of the pileipellis covered with simple to much branched excrescences which may form dense masses.
        11. Odour nitrous, sides of the lamellae finely punctate with dark reddish brown dots: M. capillaripes
        11. Odour not nitrous.
          12. Spore length 7-9 µm, cheilocystidia lageniform with a long, narrow neck. Occuring on dead leaves of Quercus suber: M. rubroquercina
          12. Spores larger, cheilocystidia rounded at the apex or more variously shaped. Not growing on leaves of Quercus.
            13. Pileus cream coloured. Lamellae with brown edge. Spores 8.5-11 x 5-6(-7.5) µm, pip-shaped. Hyphae of the pileipellis and the stipe cortex with granular yellow-brown pigment: M. brunneomarginata
            13. Pileus grey-brown to dark brown. Lamellae with red-brown to purplish brown edge. Spores 9.2-13.4 x 6.5-9.4 µm, broadly pip-shaped to almost subglobose: M. rubromarginata
      10. Hyphae of the pileipellis covered with scattered, simple, fairly coarse excrescences.
        14. Spores longer than 10 µm.
          15. Pileus purplish brown with pinkish, lilaceous to vinaceous components. Spores 10.7-14.5 x 5.6-7.5 µm. Growing on fallen Pinus cones (and decaying trunks): M. seynii
        14. Spores shorter than 10 µm.
          16. Pileus and stipe dusky red to reddish grey-brown. Found on rhizomes and partially buried stems of Scirpus holoschoenus: M. hepatica
          16. Pileus greyish to pinkish grey. Stipe olive brown to dark grey. Found on dead leaves and twigs of Quercus ilex: M. roseoquercina
  5. Hyphae and hymenial elements without clamps (or clamps are very rare). Strictly associated with conifers. Cheilocystidia apically broadly rounded: M. purpureofusca
